The Peru team in July worked to bring the knowledge of Jesus to the people in the barrios of Trujillo. The teams separated into several groups each day to accomplish varying tasks in the “barrio of the day”. Each barrio is home to a majority of single moms and their children living on government land on the arid coast where drinking water is trucked in and subsidized for these people struggling for survival. Most children are hungry therefore H4KI has a feeding program providing a hot breakfast at the barrio schools. Feeding the children and students first and then providing an opportunity for fun and learning about Jesus in vacation bible school style activities was the work of the day for part of the group. The children loved the nourishment and all of the attention of group members. The interaction with the male team members is always a special opportunity for these children who rarely have a father nor male role model in their lives. The homes in the barrios are built of cinder bricks as they can be afforded, resulting in home after home scrapped together with cardboard and a base of bricks. Building complete homes with corrugated steel roofs was a major endeavor on this year’s trip for the building team. Everything was done by hand without any power tools; digging a latrine pit, digging and pouring the foundation for a home, mixing cement, passing brick by brick for two blocks up the sandy hills, and driving nails and screws through cinder and steel in barrio after barrio were all accomplished with muscle and sweat. Log onto the Peru trip blog at the H4KI website to learn more about the team accomplishments. Hundreds of lives were directly touched by the work of this team. The conditions in the barrios are slowly improving with the assistance of better homes, meals for hungry children, and medical care soon to be housed in each barrio with the clinics under construction. All of this is a testament to the Peruvians of God’s love and the hope He provides! |
