Dress a Girl Around the World

Imagine a world where every little girl owned at least one dress...

People from all over the United States are forming clubs and are sewing pillow case dresses for Hope 4 Women International to distribute around the world. Teams and partners will hand carry these dresses to countries around the world. You will find written instructions with pictures on the "How You Can Help" page and step-by-step video instructions under the Videos tab located on the following link: www.dressagirlaroundtheworld.com

Pillowcase Dresses 4 Uganda

Hope 4 Women International has been collecting pillowcases for Uganda. We take pillowcases to teach the women to make dresses from them for the needy girls within the community.

Ladies at Smile Africa making pillowcase dressesLast March, we introduced the pillowcase dresses at Smile Africa’s tailoring school. Each student was given a pillowcase to fashion and sew her creative design on a treadle sewing machine. The remainders of the pillowcases were fashioned into dresses for the Karamojong girls to wear Easter Sunday.

This past summer Hope 4 Kids’ team members carried pillowcases, thread, elastic, double bias tape, needles, straight pins and directions for pillowcase dresses. The teams presented the supplies to and purchased sewing machines for four of our Ugandan partners.

The dresses are easy to make and a great start for those just learning to sew. The students can help the Karamojong community by making dresses for the girls while they learn their new trade. When a woman graduates from “tailoring” school she will receive a sewing machine and supplies to start her own business.

Look at this beautful pillowcase dress! It is not unusual to approach the home of one of the graduates and find the woman seated outside her mud hut or one-room apartment busily sewing a dress or shirt for a customer. The woman will take great pride in owning her own machine and will treasure it as it provides an income for her and her family.

People from around the country have helped us collect pillowcases and supplies. Friends in Minnesota found colorful fabrics and made pillowcases for us. Phoenix friends set up a blog bringing awareness to the program. They also placed collection boxes at their church and their local Starbucks.  Two churches in Phoenix - Community Church of Joy and Grace Community held a pillowcase drive. The outpouring has been tremendous! Along with donating the pillowcases and supplies people have stepped forward with funds to help us carry extra bags to Uganda and to purchase sewing machines.  Learn how we dress girls at the well
